Chesterman Beach out in front of the Wickaninnish Inn in #Tofino. Sarah Mclachlan owns the property right next to it. I was introduced to her by the owner of the resort once as she was walking her dogs. He said “We’ve got Sarah’s CDs in all of our rooms” and I didn’t realize who she was until I got back to my room. I thought she was some local island musician.

The craziest thing today! There were gale force winds in the forecast so our charter with @cleanlinetofino didn’t allow for us to get out onto the open ocean with the halibut rods because it was too crazy out there. So we stayed close to shore, put out the salmon gear and somehow still ended up catching an 18 pound halibut on it! That’s not supposed to happen! Oh, and halibut season just opened yesterday and my fish I’m holding is the first one caught in these waters this season! Do I get some sort of pin/certificate, @cleanlinetofino? ;) The fish is enough reward in itself.

Every single time I’ve driven to Tofino I’ve stopped at the side of the road to admire this little lake. Often times I’ve taken my fishing rod out of the trunk and threw a few casts. There are a lot of trout in there!

This is the view from our room at the #Wickaninnish Inn this weekend. I’ve been coming here for years after first being introduced to the property, and its proprietors the McDiarmids, by being hired by NUVO magazine to shoot portraits of them for a feature. They were a father and son team. Howie, the father, was the first doctor in Tofino. As the story goes it was before there was a road to this Vancouver Island town and he had stopped over on a floatplane trip bound for somewhere else. The locals came to the floatplane dock and begged him to stay and be the town doctor. He did, and he never left. Eventually they built this resort. He passed away a couple of years ago and his son Charles continues to head up the family business with the utmost integrity and class. It is one of the only Relais & Chateaux properties in Canada, which says they have a lot more to offer beyond this incredible view… of the McDiarmid family cabin located next door. Rest in peace, Howie.

Should you find yourself driving to #Tofino you should take a few minutes to stop at Cathedral Grove. Get out of the car. Stretch your legs. Take in some of the oldest trees in the province. There are trails that can literally make it a five minute affair, or longer if you’re not as lazy as I am. And of course it’s free. It’s just a #forest.

The REAL reason I went out to @eastvanbrand’s work-in-progress #beachcomberbrewing farm in Gibsons? I’m trying to convince him that it’d be a good idea to stock the pond there with trout like we did at @bodegaridge! Here I am doing my best to plead the case. One of the existing structures on the land that @eastvanbrand is launching #beachcomberbrewing from in Gibsons BC on the Sunshine Coast. There’s also a modern barn, greenhouses and more. My 4-year-old son likes this one best.
